Cousins, etc.,

By now you may realize that I enjoy writing.

Yet, Mark knows that I can get the story wrong. I thought it was his father’s police car that was shot up years ago and in truth, it was his stepbrother Ronnie’s. For years I’ve been telling the story wrong.

Time to fess up. There are other stories I tell. So, to fact check, I’m going to tell part of two stories I tell and see if anybody here can as Casey Kasem would say, tell, the “rest of the story.”

Who in our family was a Warlock? How do we know this to be true?
Who owned the dog “Kippy” and what Kippy’s story could I tell? (It still can bring a house down with laughter.)
These are the first two that come to mind.

John, IV

P.S. In a shout out to Nancy, do you still have a copy of the children’s book where the farm was the site of drawings to illustrate the story? What was the book’s name? And who was the author? Please and thank you.

Cousins, etc.,

My earlier post mentioned my Dad’s career in the Navy that took us on world adventures. My brothers and I lived in Japan (where Jeff was born), the Philippines, and Guam. When we came home it was always to 45 Davis Street.

We loved being with all our aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Doing the family tree has identified some questions that I never knew to ask. I have two Aunts that I don’t know anything about. It is understandable that I don’t remember Eleanor H. Elick as she passed in 1956, just four years after I was born. But I feel I should know something about Mary D. Elick (1923-1998). I don’t.

Can anyone help me with information on either Aunt?

Please and thank you.

Our European Ancestors

Fri 8/7/2020 11:16 AM

Everyone,

The Elcik’s in our Family tree can be said to originate from Western Europe. Their responses in Census reports, etc. may be due as much to economics and politics as to specific geography. How they identified is as follows: Czech Republic (14), Austria (13), Austria-Hungary (4), Hungary (4), Slovakia (4), and Austria-Slovakia (3).

My father always said we came here from Czechoslovakia even though our immigration came before its creation.

“The creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 was the culmination of the long struggle of the Czechs against their Austrian rulers and of the Slovaks against Hungarisation and their Hungarian rulers.”

My question: Is it Czech or Slovak? I know they spoke Slovak. ?

Someday I hope to have enough information for at least an online search of European ancestors. That journey needs a hint or two to begin. Can any of us suggest a town to investigate?

Based on the spelling of Elcik as Elsik in the 1910 Federal Census, I believe the surname spelling to research is Elsik.

Suggestions? Anyone?

A Texas Connection?

Cousins, etc.,

I’ve been making a big deal out of the fact that John, Sr. and his presumed brother Joseph spelled our surname Elsik.

Jeff has shared with me that he thinks Aunt Mary moved to Corpus Christi, Texas.

From my research, I know that there are quite a few Elcik and Elsik families in Texas.

“Alief Elsik High School is a high school in the Alief region of Houston, Texas, United States. Elsik High is divided into two campuses: the main campus, and the Alief Elsik Ninth Grade Center, which serves ninth graders.”

Is there a connection with us? Inquiring minds want to know. 🙂

John

P.S. It is not “inquiring minds want to know” It’s Enquiring minds want to know,” and it was the play on words of the National Enquirer magazine slogan.
