Questions for You, Please Help

Wed 8/12/2020 9:11 AM

John (NY),

I have found a public birth record for John J. Elcik with the date 22 DEC 1931. I know your dad’s birthday was 05 AUG 1943. With just 12 years separating the two John J.’s can you place the second John J.?

Also, I have a list of New York Elcik’s that I can’t tie to any branch of our family tree. Would you have information on:

  • Andrew J. Elcik – 20 NOV 1911
  • Christine C. Elcik – 25 AUG 1964
  • Deborah A. Elcik – 03 JAN 1968
  • Elizabeth M. Elcik – 16 SEP 1933
  • Francis Elcik – 04 May 1933
  • James (J./G.) Elcik – 06 AUG 1965
  • Janine V. Elcik – 18 JUL 1968
  • Lynne M. Elcik – 02 APR 1969
  • Nancy J. Elcik – 24 SEP 1967

I’ve attached PDF files for all of the above.

No rush. Any help you can provide would be welcome.

Are John Ilcik and John Elsik Cousins?

Wed 8/12/2020 9:22 AM

John (NY)

First, I’m glad we found the George Elcik/Anna Gamache family connection.

I still believe there is a direct family relationship between John Ilcik (1886-1982) and John Elsik (1866-1941), our direct ancestors. Given the 20 years that separated the two, I suspect the relationship between these two is cousins.

To prove this will require access to records in Austria-Hungary. Ancestry wasn’t much help, The Family Tree Search Engine, however, sponsored by the Church of Latter-day Saints, has produced a few leads.

I’ll keep you posted.

Smoking

Beth,
I very much enjoyed the “smoking” story.  I always thought that Jack’s dad was the mastermind behind the recipe. Learning the rest of the story is special.  My follow-up question for Jack is, does he have and use his father’s recipe for beer? And is it his father’s? As I remember, it was a “dark” brew and quite strong.  I was too young to do much more than taste it. ?
Last, I would love for you to share Byras/Byrus family information and photos. Your photos are the best.  Also, it much more fun when you have a childhood friend as a source.
I agree we do make a great team.
Take care,
John, IV

Elsik Spelling is Significant

Thu 8/13/2020 8:17 AM

John (NY),

This 1940 Census document is interesting for two reasons.

It confirms the family of Joseph (sons John J. and James G.), including his working at the Ice Cream factory, which you told me.

The 1940 Census uses the “Elsik” spelling of the surname.

The latter is particularly significant to us. The first instance I have found of your more direct relatives using this spelling is also traceable to my Great Grandfather John Elsik, Sr.
